FewerThan500.com is an online literary journal dedicated to publishing the work of those skilled at expressing creative talent in fewer than 500 words. We pride ourselves in publishing work from writers and photographers around the world.

We began as a journal of short fiction, otherwise known as flash fiction or microfiction. Much of our site is still comprised of submissions from that genre. However, beginning in 2018, we began accepting submissions of creative nonfiction, essays and photography.

Our site publishes roughly 20 percent of the submissions we receive, and the selection criteria are strictly subjective. Unfortunately, we are unable to pay for submissions at this time. This is a labor of love.

FewerThan500 was founded in suburban Chicago in 2009 by Ritta M. Basu, who serves as its editor and publisher. Basu is a former newspaper journalist and a communications professional who began writing fiction in 2008.
